Let's start over

There were some problems with the original Plum Island set of comments, so we're starting over. Feel free to question or comment on anything Island-related except for water and sewer issues, which have a separate blog (below).

Regards.

We are new residents to the island and come up from New York State at least once a month all year round and several weeks in the summer.
it has been great to see the roads have been paved. it has also been great to notice that BoB Lobsters has remained open over the winter months for that excellent bowl of clam chowder.
our pipes were frozen during our last visit probably from that cold snap experienced recently.
there seems to be an awful lot of new construction on the island. many people are fixing up the older homes. they are all so different that i feel it will add to values on the island. i still am not certain when or how the sewer/water lump sum payment will be due. if anyone has a clue please respond.?? this is my first attempt at offering comments. i hope someone would respond..

thanks

i have been doing some reading and i was wondering, if there really was a link between lyme disease and the island

responce to the Lyme Disease comment.
being from New York where lyme disease is prevelent and I being one of the casualties, i can say that this should not be an issue on the island. I know there is a deer population on the preserve and there has also been a recent deer hunt but I am not aware of the deer coming close to the main population of the island. there may be soem areas close to the preserve that could be affected.
we check our children for ticks prior to bed time. my advice.just be aware that there could be a problaem.

It's been nerve-wracking indeed watching the tides come and go. But the worst seems to be over!

I am a homeowner on Plum Island and witnessed first hand the devastation of the beach by the recent Nor'easter. I understand that there is a Restoration Fund effort underway, which I think in and of itself is a good thing. But why should Newbury residents carry all the burden? What about Newburyport? Rowley? And all the visitors to the island? I think it's about time we have a toll to the island or some type of "pass" similar to the refuge so that those monies can be used for ongoing preservation of the island for years of visitors to come. Preservation isn't a one-time thing.

ciao,

I think you should pay a toll every time you come to my town of Newburyport to enjoy Yankee Homecoming and other events that my taxes go to pay for. Stop crying, you know you don't pay for it. The state and federal government pay most of the bill for restoration. So lets have a toll on every town in MA. Stupid.

We used to travel from NY to Plum Island in the 1950's for a 3 week vacation every year. The trip took about 7 hours and was torture (air conditioning?) It seemed like the beach at the ocean was almost empty. I used to hang out with a guy named Harold Shea, our cottages were on the basin. The best was when we arrived one year to find my uncle had installed indoor plumbing... no more outhouse yay. It was my job to bury the garbage in the sand around the cottage. Marty

Thank you for this site. It is great. We have a house on the Marsh side (love it!) but do not live there year round. We can't wait to finish re piping and enjoying the fresh water. Keep the site up, it is great.

My comment is reminiscent, like Marty's.... Though my father used to hunt in the Rowley marshes, I had never been closer to Plum Island than Crane's Beach, until the late summer if 1988. I was hired for a production at the Theater of Newburyport. We spent half the day in rehearsal -- the rest of my time was my own, and I spent it on Plum Island. I had a borrowed bicycle to get out on, and could spend the rest of the day walking south along the refuge beach -- memorizing lines, going through scenes. I'd often have lunch at my favorite lunch counter (P&J's?). The whole island -- from its most dense to its least -- drew me out, day after day.

Having grown up in Massachusetts & N.H., there is nothing more beautiful to me than the New England coast (coasts -- there are so many), but after that autumn, Plum Island has a unique and apparently permanent appeal for me.

My family has had a place on Plum Island since the early 1940's...recently my husband & I bought a place for ourselves, too, since the name "plum island" is synonymous with "heavenly" for us. City water/sewer can only improve the pristine quality of the island's ecology since more and more people are being attracted to this lovely, lovely place.

I visited Plum Island today, after concluding a publisher's conference in Newburyport. It was a perfect way to unwind from the frenetic pace of my every day life. I spotted a red fox, collected a handful so seashells, listened to the waves gently lapping and remembered, this is what life is about. Thank you for allowing a visitor to relish the beauty and quiet of your wonderful beach!

I have not been to PI since the early 70's. We stayed at Salisbury Beach every Aug and would go fishing at PI at least once.
Would like to get back there for a visit. Question, if someone says they are from PI, do they really mean Newburyport? Do many people live there year round

answer to RA

the Northern tip of Plum Island is in the city of Newburyport, the middle and most of the island is in the town of Newbury. the southern tip is in the town of Ipswitch.
I am amased at the amount of New construction on the island. it would be interesting to find out just how many new building permits have been issued. it appears the Island is the busiest in the area.
i hear there is going to be something done about the fox population on the Island. It appears that many of the home residents are feeding the foxes to prevent them from attacking the pets. is this true???

I went to Plum Island today. My daughter and I went to the beach that enters near Surfland bait shop. I have never been to that particular area and will likely never go there again. I was not comfortable with the strong undertow and quick drop off on the beach. I could feel the tide pulling me out-a fit 160 pound middle ager. despite my daughter being an able swimmer I wouldn't let her go in without being right next to her. I will be sticking to Sandy Point from herein. Yes it was high tide.

Hi Plum Island! I miss you and think of you very often. You must remember me,we were year rounders, the blizzard of 78' and Moe's and Dick's and PJ's and The Point and the dull, broken glass that you could walk barefoot on in the parking lot adjacent to what is now Dick's Variety I think. So glad someone made this website...AWESOME!loVE, kATY

I live on the island and just went for a walk yesterday along the marsh. It seems that although there is a beach cleanup twice a year, that nobody pays attention to all the trash accumulating in the marsh. Does anyone know how to go about setting up a volunteer marsh cleanup? even if it would be as simple as getting together some saturday morning with garbage bags and leaving them alongside the road for the disposal trucks. But nothing is ever that simple! haha...can anyone give me a place to start??

October 17th and I've enjoyed yet another beautiful walk along the shore (despite the unusually cold weather). My thoughts are with my neighbors who are currently packing and waiting to see how the next twenty-four hours plays out. Let's hope the storm surge is less than anticipated.

Can anyone recommend the best IT automation utility for a small IT service company like mine? Does anyone use Kaseya.com or GFI.com? How do they compare to these guys I found recently: N-able N-central helpdesk software
? What is your best take in cost vs performance among those three? I need a good advice please... Thanks in advance!
